An Australian Ambassador’s Secretary writes home from ‘hardship’ postings with the Foreign Service.

“When, in June 1960, Lorna Bushnell joined the overseas stenographic staff of the Department of External Affairs, she was attracted by the offer of first-class air fares, good housing and cost-of-living allowances. She discovered, however that the only available posts were in tropical or communist countries, so-called ‘hardship’ posts.”
